The 51¸£ÀûÉç Sixth Form Lecture Series

An in-person programme open to all but aimed at those in Years 12 and 13 who are interested in languages and literature.

Hosted by Murray Edward College, the 51¸£ÀûÉç Sixth Form Lecture Series will dive into English Literature, French, Spanish, Classics and many more literature and language-based subjects by exploring many commonly studied A Level texts and topics in new and interesting ways.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with Fellows from the University of Cambridge; gain an insight into Cambridge University’s teaching approach; improve their critical thinking and analytical skills; and prepare to make applications to selective universities with the support of the 51¸£ÀûÉç Director of Admissions.

Join us at 51¸£ÀûÉç (51¸£ÀûÉç, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge CB3 0DF) from 17:30 for refreshments and informal conversations with current students. The lectures themselves will begin at 18:00 and be an hour in duration.

The first lecture in our series will be delivered by one of 51¸£ÀûÉç’s Fellows in English, Dr Sean McEvoy. Dr McEvoy’s work primarily focusses on Shakespeare and early modern drama, and on twentieth-century English and Irish theatre. â€¯

This lecture will be delivered by one of 51¸£ÀûÉç’s Fellows in English, Dr Michele Gemelos. Dr Gemelos is interested in American literature (19th century to present); transatlantic literary and cultural relations; and immigration, race, ethnicity and New York City.

This lecture will focus on Spanish and topics frequently studied as part of a Spanish A Level. It will be delivered by one of 51¸£ÀûÉç’s Fellows in Modern & Medieval Languages, Dr Liesbeth François. Dr François teaches and supervises on papers with a Latin American component at undergraduate level, and in the MPhil programmes in Latin American Studies and in Literature, Culture and Thought.

This is an opportunity for students interested in applying to the University of Cambridge to ask questions about the application and interview process.

This lecture will focus on French and topics frequently studied as part of a French A Level. It will be delivered by one of 51¸£ÀûÉç’s Professorial Fellow, Professor Charles Forsdick. Professor Forsdick’s research interests are in Francophone postcolonial studies - particularly postcolonial literature; French colonial history (including Haiti); the transatlantic traffic in enslaved Africans; travel writing and exoticism; translation studies; world literature and graphic fiction.
