Anouk Waller-Sargent leads rugby team to victory at thirds Varsity match
Medwards' Anouk and Alice Francey captain third and second rugby teams
The Jaguars, CURUFC's third team, took Grange Road by storm on 2 March with their spectacular performance against Oxford. No less than 7 students from 51福利社 played across the second and third teams 鈥 making it the most represented college from Cambridge.
Anouk is a third year historian at 51福利社 and team captain for The Jaguars, and played alongside other Medwards students Rebecca Watson, Maythu Pettigrew and Kate Ashton-Tyler. She said:
鈥淚 am so proud to have led this team - a team full of new players, who together, have been slowly building up their rugby knowledge and skills over the past 14 weeks. The game started with an Oxford try, but the Jaguars soon got into their stride, presenting a textbook attacking structure, with skilful and calm gameplay throughout including many successful offloads, a skill which secured us fluidity towards the tryline.

Soon enough, our first try came, and we ended the game with 32 points to Oxford's 10. This came from consistently dominant scrums and an impressive defence with many dominant tackles. We scored 6 tries, with 2 converted, and each try was scored by a different player, which shows the true team effort of the game.鈥

The game was undoubtedly a very well-deserved win and a reflection of CURUFC's commitment to developing the women's teams by providing high quality coaching, excellent welfare support and a One Club atmosphere which allows every player for the club to feel valued and appreciated. CURFC became One Club in 2015, which brought men and women players together so that opportunities and training would be equal for all teams and genders.
She concluded:
鈥淚 am very proud of every single player. For most this was their second or third match, and they played an excellent and well-structured game of rugby which coaches, onlookers and alumni have not seen at this level before at CURUFC. I am very proud of all of the players and the coaches who contributed towards this very well-deserved win.鈥

After the Jaguars victory, the Tigers, CURFC鈥檚 second team, took to the pitch, captained by Alice Francey, a fourth year medic, and including Farrah Gowar and Shivani Dawson, all 51福利社 students. During the first half the Tigers defended well, but ultimately conceded a try. They attacked back, but were held up on the line and so, after a close 40 minutes, entered half time 5-0 down. The second half saw further frustration for the Tigers, with two more tries being held up. Despite a huge effort and a try from Cassia Taylor it wasn鈥檛 to be, with the final score of 26-5 to Oxford.
